Vallejo’s Pista sa Nayon: Filipino Cultural Celebration

For more information, visit the festival website at
www.vallejopistasanayon.com

Vallejo, CA – Vallejo’s annual Pista sa Nayon: Filipino Cultural
Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 7, at the beautiful Vallejo
Warterfront Park on Mare Island Way.

The festivities kick-off with a parade at 9:00 a.m., then continues
with non-stop entertainment on two stages and ends at 6:00 p.m. This
annual event is Vallejo’s largest FREE outdoor festival that draws crowds
wanting to sample Philippine cuisine, soak up Filipino hospitality, and
enjoy entertainment that crosses all ages, cultures and ethnicities.
Everyone is invited to bring their lawn chairs, and blankets to enjoy
top notch entertainment in a family-friendly environment.

Highlighting this year’s entertainment will be one of the
Philippines’ hottest movie stars, Patricia Javier. The star of numerous
box-office hits in the Philippines, Javier has moved into a new career as a
recording artist. Her beautiful face, sensual body and angelic voice are
the perfect ingredients that led her to superstardom in the Philippines.
Other performers include: Ang Grupong Pendong featuring original
members of the award-winning folk/rock group Asin; Likha Pilipino Dance
Troupe; award-winning Bay Area –based reggae group, Native Elements;
Vallejo girl vocal group Four Corners; singing sensation Angelo Trinidad;
local boy bands Eye Eighty and Legaci; and Vallejo’s own Springstowne
Drum Line and the Jesse Bethel Marching Band. Closing out the show will
be the hot dance band, D’Groove, led by local musician Cesar
Fortuno.

In addition to the Main Stage entertainment, the Pilipino Youth
Coalition (PYC) of Vallejo will be showcasing local “youth-oriented” acts
on their PYC Stage. These acts are up-and-coming performers and
regulars such as the Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute. New to this years
festival is the Culinary Pavilion sponsored by the popular Mama Sita and
Lola Sita brand food products. The Culinary Pavilion will feature cooking
demonstrations, Balut (fermented duck egg) and Longanisa (sausage)
eating contests and product giveaways. Non-Filipinos will learn about
Filipino cooking, food and products.  Also, the popular Arts & Culture tent
will be back with children’s activities as well.

One of the most exciting new additions to this year’s festival is the
Escrima Kali Arnis Tournament. This full contact Filipino
stick-fighting tournament is sure to bring out competitors from all over Northern
CA wanting to test their skills and compete against some of the best
fighters in the region. Filipino Martial Arts has recently been featured
in numerous television shows and movies such as Human Weapon, Fight
Club, Bourne Identity, and 300. Even martial arts legend, Bruce Lee,
studied Filipino stick fighting and showcased it in his epic movie, Enter the
Dragon. The tournament is the only one of its kind held in conjunction
with a major outdoor Filipino festival anywhere in America.

Pista sa Nayon is the highlight of the City of Vallejo’s Philippine
Cultural Month celebrated throughout the month of June. Filipinos
around the world celebrate June 12 as Philippine Independence Day, when
Filipinos first proclaimed their independence from Spain after over 300
years of colonial rule. The festival directors this year are Norma Placido
and Eva Calilan. The Philippine Cultural Month overall chair is Nilo
Arcilla.
