Is your F/MA training based on dueling(face-to-face square off) or scenario(self-defense or combatives)?

Since I work in the security and law enforcement field,my FMA training forms the foundation of what I use in my tool box of self survival.. It has come in use several times in the past and it is good to know that the training acquired over the years still work when the merde hits the oscillating mechanism.. I know several people who use their appropriate training in the FMA in their careers also.. It's hard to keep good training down when the stuff hits the fan..

It has a duel aspect (developped during the time the group was active in empty hand tournaments) and also a self defense aspect.
The duel aspect is on empty hand striking (90% punching, 10% kicking) .... the self defense is mixed striking-breaking-locking-throwing, defending unarmed against multiple (armed) opponents, weapon fighting.

Both, really. Again from my tournament expeariance of various formats, a few challenges I have had over the years from young ego's wanting to prove something to themselves, working on the doors of bars and night clubs and being not a very nice person as a youth on the streets. All of these things have influenced how I teach the knowledge to my students.

I think the basis of anyones teaching skills will also be based on their own personal life expeariances and I think that is why two instructors from the same system can look and teach in very different ways.

Best regards

both. the dueling aspect teaches you the solid foundational principles that you apply in a scenario.
