I know it's hilarious to even just think about it, but I wonder if you'd wear this yourself for light live stick OR heavy padded stick sparring ( biggrin.gif ):

In comparison to WEKAF-style head protectors that cost P1,800 - P2,000 in Quiapo, one unit of this welder's mask only costs P300+ at Handyman and similar stores. As for the material, I believe it can stand some beating. [Of course, it should never be used for heavy live stick sparring or, worse, for competition.]

From where I am now (Iloilo City), one can't find and buy any FMA gear (except for sticks) as there's no store that sells them here. So makeshifts come into the picture.

Your comments and suggestions please.

That's too cumbersome for light live stick sparring. You can use this,

You're not opting to hit the head, right?

the welder's mark is very heavy and can move and fall out anytime especially with fast twitching movements. the glasses can break easily too, even with 2 layers (dark-outer and clear-inner).

I own a welders mask and my observations: (the parts in parenthesis are my assessment of DIY mods necessary to address the problems)

- Welder's masks have poor peripheral vision as it was designed for jobs where you're looking straight ahead. (one hell of a mod job to cut out a bigger eye slot)

- The visors are made of dark glass that can shatter, it was designed to protect against sparks and extra bright light, not impact. (possible to mod this, just have to know where to get shatter proof plastics-like helmet visors)

- Helmet is not secure on one's head, it was not designed for the user to be moving really fast. (can be modified with some simple straps)

- The helmet's size is much bigger than a human's face and has a very different silhouette. (Major modification job)

It would be good for:
-Sparring sessions where the head is not a target
-half-speed half strength sparring session
-practicing low visibility encounters

-----------------

But I haven't tested it for sparring myself, and since I already have a normal helmet, I'm reserving it for welding jobs

What's that? The kind that the SWAT and Military use? I wonder if it's designed to withstand repeated impact or if it's supposed to be replaced every time it gets hit.

I wonder what kind of plastic they use to make those transparent shields used by the anti-riot police. It would probably make good goggles or masks for weapons sparring.

You save 2000 pesos now, but you may pay 100,000+ pesos in facial and eye surgery later. Just save up and order your headgear from Cebu.

No goggles (except the ones they use in mensur, picture below) can adequately protect the eyes. The one in the picture above probably will break at the first impact. It at least gives a minimal protection against accidental thrust/slash in a no head-hit light/heavy live stick sparring.
